Overview
CSW’s Knowledge Delivery Engine (KDE) forms part of CSW’s Knowledge Management Suite (KMS) and is a complete, low cost solution for the storage, query and delivery of high volume content to multiple media formats.

Based on XML open architectures KDE allows organisations to extend and adapt, step-by-step according to their individual business requirements, without the need to rip and replace existing systems., It boasts a complete web application programming interface (API) which can be configured to meet an organisation’s individual needs, allowing the system to be integrated with existing office systems and intranets and for business-to-business transactions.

KDE stores content as the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) through the use of a native XML database to provide the most responsive and robust delivery method possible. This content can then be used in multiple products or publications and delivered in multiple formats, saving valuable production time and reducing time to market.

KDE encompasses all the functionality you'd expect to find in a powerful enterprise search engine providing both full text search and XML search across your entire enterprise content. In addition, XQuery provides a rich and flexible new language that is used to query and process XML content in almost unlimited ways and has been designed specifically to query XML documents. KDE harnesses this functionality and extends it to allow queries of whole collections of information with just a single XQuery.

This powerful engine produces precisely the information elements required without a lot of pre-processing, further reducing production costs. Complex, technical documents can be structured to allow inter-document query on content marked up to a high degree of granularity. Sections can then be queried separately and then aggregated before being returned to the user as a PDF document for viewing and printing. For example a clinician may query a condition and aggregate three results from different manuals into a single resulting document.

By transforming XML, KDE produces multiple media formats for delivery, including PDF, Microsoft Word 2003, XHTML, OpenDoc formats and the generation of preview proofs in PDF format at the click of a button. It also produces different flavours of XHTML formatted for different screen sizes, as used in browsers on devices such as Smartphones and PDAs.

Each implementation of KDE can be individually customised and is designed for maximum interoperability while being fully scalable to millions of requests per day. In addition, access control features provide secure access to individual resources within KDE according to the user, group, role or location, enabling the control and tracking of user and system access, showing who is using which piece of content, when and for what purpose across the entire organisation.
